FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before your first bay session — rules, answers, no surprises.

General Questions

  • Rent-A-Bay is a professional DIY auto repair facility where you rent a fully equipped garage bay by the hour. You bring the ambition — we supply the lift, tools, and a clean, well-lit workspace. It's perfect for car enthusiasts, weekend mechanics, and anyone who wants to do their own repairs without needing a full garage at home.

  • Anyone who wants to work on their own vehicle. Our customers range from first-time DIYers changing their own oil for the first time to seasoned gearheads doing engine swaps. Whether you live in an apartment with no driveway, or just need access to a lift, we've got a bay for you.

  • Walk-ins are welcome whenever bays are available. However, we strongly recommend calling ahead or booking online to guarantee your preferred time slot — especially on weekends. Members get priority scheduling and first access to same-day openings.

  • We accommodate most standard passenger vehicles, trucks, SUVs, and light-duty vans. Our lifts are rated for vehicles up to 12,000 lbs. If you have an oversized vehicle or something unusual, give us a call before booking and we'll confirm compatibility.

  • Not at all. Our staff is knowledgeable and happy to offer guidance. We can point you toward the right tool, help you understand what you're looking at, or talk through a procedure step-by-step. We're not here to do the work for you, but we'll make sure you're set up for success.

Pricing & Billing

  • Walk-in bay rental is $50 per hour. A full-day pass (8 hours) is available for $250, saving you $150 compared to hourly. Members enjoy significantly lower effective rates — as low as $10/hr on our Annual plan. Check the Memberships page for the full breakdown.

  • Your $50/hr covers the bay, the lift, and access to our full tool inventory — hand tools, power tools, specialty automotive tools, a parts washer, and more. Air compressor access, shop lighting, and a clean working environment are all included. You only pay extra for consumable items like rags, fluids, or replacement shop supplies you use up.

  • Yes — the minimum booking is 1 hour. If you finish your job early, you won't be charged for the remaining time in your block. Time overages are billed at the standard $50/hr rate.

  • We accept all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and cash. A valid credit card is required at check-in to cover any potential overages or damages.

  • Cancellations made more than 24 hours before your booking are fully refunded. Cancellations within 24 hours may be subject to a 1-hour cancellation fee. No-shows forfeit the booking in full. Members can reschedule anytime at no charge.

Tools & Equipment

  • We stock a comprehensive shop tool inventory including: metric and SAE socket sets (1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drive), torque wrenches, combination wrenches, impact wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, pliers, pry bars, hammers, pullers, spring compressors, brake tools, oil filter wrenches, diagnostic scan tools, multimeters, and more. See our full tool list for details.

  • Yes. Every bay is equipped with a professional two-post or four-post hydraulic lift. We also have floor jacks and jack stands available as supplementary support when needed. All lifts are inspected and rated to current industry safety standards.

  • Yes — we have professional-grade scan tools available for check engine light diagnosis, ABS/airbag codes, live sensor data, and basic programming. For advanced dealer-level programming (key fobs, module resets), we can point you to local specialists.

  • Absolutely. You're welcome to bring your own tools and use them alongside ours. We only ask that you label any personal tools clearly and return all borrowed shop tools before leaving your bay.

  • Let our staff know. We're always expanding our tool inventory based on customer needs. If it's a common specialty tool we don't have yet, we'll log the request and work on sourcing it. For immediate needs, the nearest auto parts store is just a few minutes away.

Membership

  • We offer two membership tiers beyond walk-in: Monthly at $149/month (includes 4 hours of bay time per month, ~$37/hr effective) and Annual at $1,200/year (includes 100 hours of bay time, under $10/hr effective). Both plans include priority booking and member discounts on shop supplies.

  • Monthly plan hours do not roll over month-to-month. Annual plan hours are available to use at any point during your membership year — no monthly caps. If you need more hours beyond your plan, additional time is available at a discounted member rate.

  • You can upgrade your plan at any time — the price difference is prorated. Monthly plans can be cancelled with 30 days' notice. Annual plans can be cancelled with a prorated refund for unused months, minus a $50 processing fee.

  • Memberships are tied to an individual account and are non-transferable. However, members can bring a guest into the bay during their session at no additional charge — provided the guest is supervised and follows all safety protocols.

Safety & Rules

  • Absolutely. Safety is our top priority. All customers must: wear closed-toe shoes, keep the work area clear of tripping hazards, never leave a vehicle unsupported on a lift without proper jack stand backup, follow all posted bay rules, and complete a quick safety orientation on your first visit. Protective eyewear is available and encouraged.

  • The following are strictly prohibited: smoking or vaping on premises, alcohol or drug use, working on vehicles with active fuel leaks without prior staff approval, welding or cutting without a prior agreement, performing work on vehicles not registered in your name without documented owner permission, and any unsafe behavior that endangers others in the facility.

  • Customers are responsible for any damage to shop equipment caused by misuse or negligence. We're not liable for damage to your vehicle resulting from your own work — you're the mechanic. That said, our team is always available to help make sure procedures are done correctly. A credit card hold is taken at check-in and released at checkout if the bay is returned in good order.

  • We welcome young car enthusiasts, but children must remain supervised at all times and may not operate lifts or power tools. All minors must remain in the bay area with their parent or guardian. We want this to be a great learning experience — just a safe one.

  • We provide proper fluid disposal containers for motor oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Please use them — improper disposal is an EPA violation. We handle all recycling and disposal responsibly at no additional cost to you.

Shop Rules

All customers must read and agree to these rules before using the facility.

Materials & Fluids

  • 01

Customers may bring fluids, liquids, and materials typically used in automotive repair and non-alcoholic beverages into the shop for use. Caustic solutions and items that can deteriorate vehicle finishes must be handled only by Rent-A-Bay staff in designated areas.

  • 02

All spills must be promptly contained using the spill kit located in the respective service bay.

  • 03

Used motor oil must be disposed of into oil drain containers located in each service bay. Other used vehicle fluids must be disposed of into appropriate fluid drain containers.

Only beverages in covered and non-breakable containers may be consumed in the shop area. Food and beverage containers and waste must be disposed of in proper waste or recycling bins. Clean up any spills on floors, tables, counters, or the microwave.

  • 05

No food may be kept in vehicles while they are stored on the property.

Vehicle & Lift Operation

  • 07

Customers may not re-position automotive lift points once vehicles have been placed on a lift. If re-positioning is needed, request assistance from a Rent-A-Bay staff member.

  • 08

Customers may only use black impact sockets with pneumatic/air impact tools. Chrome impact sockets are expressly prohibited with air impact tools.

  • 09

Customers may not disconnect any charged or pressurized AC lines/components or cause refrigerant to escape. All AC work requiring line disconnection must be performed only after refrigerants have been professionally drained and safely stored.

  • 10

Car covers are allowed if storing a vehicle in a storage space.

Safety & Prohibited Items

  • 11

Smoking is strictly prohibited on the entire property at all times. No torches or flame-producing equipment of any type may be used in the facility. Gasoline may not be stored in any form other than vehicle fuel tanks.

  • 12

Alcohol and recreational drug use are strictly prohibited on the property. Any customer appearing to be under the influence will be asked to leave and charged for the full reserved window.

  • 13

Customers and all persons accompanying them must wear shirts and boots or closed-heel, closed-toe shoes at all times in service bays. Flip flops, sandals, and open-toe footwear are not permitted. Long hair must be tied back.

  • 14

No pets are allowed on the property.

Bay Conduct & Respect

  • 15

Rude, hateful, disrespectful, or aggressive language or actions will not be tolerated toward other customers or staff. Rent-A-Bay reserves the right to terminate the reservation and remove the customer from the property.

  • 16

Customers may not enter any other service bay for any reason without permission from both a staff member and the occupant of that bay. Violations will result in removal from the premises and a charge for the full reserved window.

  • 17

Customers may not play music in the shop area through speakers. Earphones or headphones only.

  • 18

Customers may not solicit business within the premises or any common area.

  • 19

Customers may not use the facility for training by professional mechanics except with advance written permission from Rent-A-Bay.

Parking & Legal

  • 20

Vehicles not being repaired must be parked in designated customer or guest parking areas. Overnight parking is not permitted unless paid for. Vehicles in violation will be towed. All traffic signs and pedestrian areas must be respected.

  • 21

Customers must abide by all applicable laws while on the property, including federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and other similar requirements.

  • 22

Children under 18 are allowed only in the lounge (carpeted) area unless granted permission by a Rent-A-Bay staff member and under the supervision of a parent or guardian at all times.

By booking a bay, all customers agree to these rules in full. Rent-A-Bay reserves the right to terminate any session and remove any customer from the property for violations without refund.
